Maths WeekWe had maths week running from the 17th to 21st October throughout the school with various puzzles and problems to solve around the school. Well done to all the maths teachers and pupils for getting involved.Izak Cubes: Franz Schlindwein, the designer of the Izak cubes gave a class on Friday 28th October to all first years with some of our maths teachers in attendance to note the benefit of this innovated way of problem solving around Maths.
Michael White, HSCL, is running an attendance challenge between first, second and third year class groups. The First Years were the winning class group in the first of four Inter-Class Attendance Competitions that are being run over the duration of the School year.Their score of 91.6% just pipped the Second and Third Year Class groups, who were joint second with a score of 91.2%. The winning class received a DVD and pizza on Friday the 28th October.
The second attendance competition is now under way. The winners will be announced a few days before the Christmas Holidays. It has been a very good start to the competitions. Keep up the good attendance! The overall winner for the year will receive a free day trip in May.
The Leaving Certificate class attended a “Study Skills Seminar” in St. Angela’s College as part of the Access programme. The students really engaged with the tutor and in return the tutor commented that “they were the nicest group of Leaving Certificates that she had dealt with this year and that they spoke so positively about their school”. A bus and lunch was provided free of charge to the students.Open Day
The Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied 2 students attended the open days in both Sligo College of Further Education and IT Sligo on Thursday 20 October last. Ms McDermott organized the event and accompanied the students on the day.Cake Sale
A core group of seven girls organized a “cake sale” to raise money for the many thousands of people who were left homeless in Haiti in the wake of hurricane Matthew. The television pictures depicting the devastation touched their heart and prompted them into action. The group raised in excess of €110 and has also organized a fancy dress day for Thursday 27 October with seasonal fun and games during lunchtime.
